#2 How to prepare for landscape Photography

If you find it’s a struggle to imagine something other than what you’re looking at, for now, I encourage you to be willing to pretend. Stretch your imagination. Even if you’ve never seen something before, just imagine it as you wish. You don’t need to stay rooted in rigid, logical thinking. Nature photography is a creative act and your mind has infinite bounds — push them! In particular, other photographers’ images can have a profound effect on your previsualizing process. Seeing what someone else did can give you ideas about how you would do it. Here’s a simple exercise to help you begin to previsualize photographs:

  1. Think of a location in nature that you find intriguing. It can be anywhere.
  2. Go online and search Flickr.com for photos of that place.
  3. Spend 15-20 minutes looking at photos of your location.
  4. With each photo you examine, think of how the photographer set up the shot. Visualize where the camera must have been placed. Get a general sense of what it must have been like to be there at that moment. Try to be as specific as you can.
  5. Still imagining being on location, picture yourself moving the camera to make different shots. What kinds of compositions could you come up with? What’s happening with the light? What do you imagine you would see if you looked behind you?

#1 Protect Yourself

Photographing nature often involves various type of risk. As many safety training classes teach, you need to be able to assess the risk factors and minimize them. The more risk factors present at one time, the more likely it is that an accident (or “incident”) will occur. An accident in nature could range from getting a bad sunburn, to slipping down a hill and scratching yourself with a tree branch, to being struck by lightning. Anything’s possible out there. The smart nature photographer doesn’t take unnecessary risks to get the shot. Assess your priorities, evaluate the situation, and make clear decisions about your safety.

Following are a few tips for taking care of yourself in nature:

  • Bring a light. Nature photographers often hike over uneven terrain in the predawn hours or after sunset. A flashlight is an essential piece of gear for the nature photographer; a headlamp allows you to keep your hands free. I am giving you link to buy any kind of torch light of your choice.

  • Put on sunscreen. It’s easy to lose track of time when you’re out shooting; a couple of hours in the sun (even under cloud cover) and you can get cooked. In India, temperature raises to 40-45 degree centigrade in summer which can cause you sunburn.

  • Seek shelter in bad weather. Lightning and flash floods are common in the wilderness, especially in desert and alpine environments.

  • Watch your step. It’s easy to become fixated on a part of the scene you’re interested in photographing and charge forward without looking where you’re walking. This is a recipe for a twisted ankle or worse.

  • Don’t climb up what you can’t climb down, and vice versa. This rule especially applies when you’re carrying a heavy backpack.

  • Keep your distance from wildlife, especially large mammals like tiger, lion etc.

  • Tell someone where you’re going. When possible, hike with a buddy or in a group, but when you want to get out into the wild yourself, someone needs to know where you’re going and when you’ll be back.

  • Carry a locator beacon. Don’t rely on your cell phone GPS. It does not work on every area especially when there’s no network.  In recent years many new systems have come into the market that help people find you should you need to be rescued.

  • Wear appropriate clothing for the weather. Don’t wear jeans or full shirts in summer. Shorts, t-shirts are more than enough.

  • Bring water. At least carry 2 litre water bottle with you if you’re going for 5-6 hours. You need to stay hydrated especially in hot areas.

#10 How to add water reflection using Photoshop

10-1

Hello friends I am Vaibhav and in this tutorial I am going to show you how to add water reflection using Photoshop. As you can see from the above picture there is no doubt that your photo will look stunning after the final touch. You just select the are that you want the reflection of, than copy it and then paste it in the inverted form. this is it.

Step 1

Open your photo in PS and press “M” for the rectangular marquee tool or you can also select it from the left panel. Select the area that you want the reflection of.

10-2

Step 2

Press ctrl+c to copy it. Press ctrl+n for the new file and then paste it with ctrl+v.

step 3

After that go to image->image rotation->flip canvas vertical. This will flip your canvas upside down.

10-4-Recovered

step 4

After you inverted photo. Press F7 for the pop-up window of layer. Select “layer 1” which is made by default as you pasted a photo. Press ctrl+A to select the whole image and then press ctrl+c to copy it.

10-5-Recovered

step 5

Now to go back to your old photo(original one) and now press ctrl+v to paste that.

10-6-Recovered

step 6

Press F7 for the pop-up window of layer. Select the layer which you have just pasted or default layer 1. Select the “move tool” or simply press “V”. Align the inverted photo just below the the real one or as shown in figure below. Don’t be panic if your photo has been cut due to small canvas size. We will fix that in next step.

10-7-Recovered

step 7

Now go to image->canvas size or just press ctrl+alt+c. Now you will see a pop up window of canvas size. First off check “relative” and change “pixels” to “percent”. Now in the “height” form write 50. Now in the “anchor” menu click on the box which is on the first row but on the second column. You can refer with the image shown below.

10-8

step 8

Now you can see that the canvas size has been increased and your cut photo is back again. If the canvas size is too big than you can simply crop that. Just select the crop tool from the left menu or press “C”. Now crop your photo by simply drag and drop. Double click on your photo or just press “Enter” to finalize cropping.

10-9

step 9

Press F7 for the pop-up window of layers. Add new layer by pressing ctrl+shift+N. Press and hold ctrl and click on the image of the layer that contains your inverted reflection to select the area. Now click back on the new layer that you have just created. Now click on the foreground color which is on the left panel. Now you can see a window of foreground color. Enter the value as shown below. It will select your foreground color to ocean blue.

10-10

step 10

Now click gradient or simply press “G”. Now look ate the top left of the option bar which is present on the upper side of PS. Drop the “Click to edit the menu”. You can see a circle look like structure on the top right of the dropped window, click on that and select “reset gradients”. It will simply get back your pre-defined gradients. Don’t you will not loose the gradients that you have downloaded from web, it just get back the pre-defined one. Now click on the second option that is changing from blue to transparent.

10-11

step 11

With your newly created layer selected. Press and hold “Shift” simply drag and drop the gradient from down to up. You can see that the bottom of the bottom has changed a bit. If you are not satisfied do this step one more time. If you have overdone it just reduce the opacity of that layer which you can found on the upper side of layer window.

10-12

step 12

Now go to filters->distort->ripple. You can see a pop-up window of ripple. Select “large” and than adjust the amount as per your requirement. Don’t go with the one that is shown below because I am showing you the photo that I was captured using 16 MP camera. May be you shot your photo with different MP camera. So the number of pixels varies as MP is varying.

10-14

step 13

Now once again go to filters but this time go to stylize and than “wind”. If your photo has low resolution i.e. lower than 2400 pixels in width then select “wind” otherwise select “blast’. Now select “from the left” and press ok. Now do it one more time but this time select “from the right”.

10-16

step 14

Now press F7 for the layer window. Press and hold “ctrl” and the layer which has reflection and the layer which we have used for gradient. After selecting them both, right click on that layer and click on “merge layer visible”. It simply merges your layer and now you can see that the two layer has been merged.

step 15

Now reduce the opacity as per your requirement of the newly merged layer. Select eraser tool or simply press “E”. With the eraser tool selected right click on any area of the photo to bring the eraser window. Now reduce the hardness to 0% and apply it on the area that you want to delete or in the better words I would say the area from the real picture that you want back. It could be tree, surface etc.
