Hello guys I am Vaibhav and in this tutorial I am going to shown you how to add lens flare without disturbing the original image. Here I am using Photoshop CS 6 for windows. You can watch the written tutorial in HD here. You  can see the dazzling glowing effect near the head of that person which added a lot of attraction in this photo. Sometimes it adds a new touch to your photo. We are going to use filter, “fill” menu, blending mode and layer mask to do this effect.

step 1

With your window open. Go to filter->render->lens flare. It will give you effect like lens flare.

step 2

Place the center (+ sign) where you the glowing effect to be. Basically I always select 35 mm prime lens because it’s lens flare effect is too good as compared to the other 3 effects. 50-300mm zoom lens gives distorted lens flare effect. Lens flare of 105 mm lens is too big and bright and movie prime lens gives effect as video camera gives us. Press OK.

step 3

Now press ctrl+z to undo lens flare. You’re wondering why did you waste your time for the lens flare filter if you have just undone this. My dear friends I am going to explain that in step #8.

step 4

Now press F7 for the layer window. Add an new layer by pressing at the bottom of the layer window or you can just ctrl+shift+N(for windows) and command+shift+N(for mac).

step 5

Now click on the new layer and make it active. If the layer is highlighted with blue then it is an active layer. The changes or adjustment you are going to apply will be applied only on your active layer. Now go to edit->fill or you  can also press shift+F5. It will fill your new layer with the color that you are going to use or with texture.

step 6

In the “edit” window. For the content drop down menu, select black. Because we are going to fill our newly created layer with black color. If you select white color then it will fill your active layer with white color. Leave the blending mode to “normal” and set the opacity to 100%. Press OK.

step 7

Now press F7 for the layer window. Select the newly created that and make it active. Go to filter->lens flare or you can press ctrl+F or command + F for mac. By pressing ctrl+F PS will automatically apply your last used filter with the same setting. In this case the last filter that we used is lens flare effect that we used in step #3. So PS will automatically apply the “lens flare” effect with the same settings.

step 8

Now here is the answer to your step #3 question, “Why did we undo the lens flare effect?”. Because as I said in step #7 by pressing ctrl+F or command+F. PS will automatically apply your last used filter with same setting and we filled the new layer with black  color in step #6 and then we applied lens flare filter. If we didn’t apply lens flare effect in step #3 then PS would not have any data of lens flare filter and if you go to filter->render->lens flare then you couldn’t guess where to put the center of the lens flare effect(+ sign) as your screen is filled with black color.

Now Press F7 for the layer window. Now you can see the black background has gone. Change the blending mode to “screen”. Note that you can decrease the opacity if you think that your lens flare effect is too bright.

step 9

Press F7 for the layer window. Make your layer 1 as active layer by clicking on it. Now add a layer mask as shown in figure below.

step 10

Basically the role of layer mask is to revert back the old pixels or original pixels where you apply it via brush Note that your foreground color has been changed to white and background to black because we have applied layer mask. Now press “X” to exchange your foreground color with the background color. Now your foreground color is black. Now select brush tool from the left menu or you can just press “B”. We selected this because we are getting back our old pixels or old color on the area which has been disturbed by lens flare effect. I this photo I am going to apply it to surfer.

step 11

Now right click on the photo to open the brush shirt setting menu. Set the hardness to 0% and size as per your requirement. Apply the brush on the area where you don’t want the glowing effect. I am going to apply it to surfer in this photo.
