Video Tutorial

Hello guys it’s Vaibhav here and in this tutorial I am going to show you how to add sun rays effect using PS. I am using PS CS6 for windows. You can also watch the video tutorial created by me if you want to save your time. We are just going to use filter, blending mode and layers for this tutorial.

step 1

Open up your photo.

step 2

Press F7 for the layer window. Press ctrl+shift+N for the new layer. Add an adjustment layer which you can find at the bottom of the layer window or as shown in figure. Press “D” to reset the foreground color to black and background to white.

step 3

After adding layer mask, click back on the layer thumbnail. Don’t forget this step. It’s one of the most important step. Now anything we do will apply on the layer, not on the layer mask.

step 4

Now we are going to add a filter which is responsible for the ray formation. Go to filter->render->cloud. You can see a black and white cloud like structure has captured your PS screen. Don’t you worry we are going to remove that.

step 5

Press F7 for the layer window. Change the blending mode to “soft light”. Basically soft light mode. Soft mode is low contrast version of overlay mode, which basically softens your light.

step 6

Here we are going to add one more filter. Now go to filter->blur->radial blur. Change the mode to zoom and select the best quality. Drag and drop the center of the map to the approximately area where your sun or light source lies in the original photo. Now by hit and trial method adjust the amount of radial blur. Basically I choose it between 60-80 for the smooth rays. Don’t choose 100 because in some photo your rays i.e. your added cloud layer will be vanished. Give OK if you are not satisfied with your result then press ctrl+z for undo and once again go back to radial blur and this time choose different amount. You can check this YouTube video if you find any difficulty.

step 7

Now press F7 for the layer window. Click on the added mask tool that is the white area adjacent to your layer 1. Note that now your foreground color has changed to white and background to black. This is because you’ve selected layer mask tool.

step 8

Now press “B” for the brush tool. Select black as your foreground color. Apply the brush on the area where you don’t want the rays to be. For example the lake, clouds(as practically you cannot see sun rays below the cloud).

And finally you are done here. I know you guys are thinking it’s so long trick but it would take only 3-4 minutes or less if you know are familiar with Photoshop.
