Hello guys I am Vaibhav and in this tutorial I am going to show you how to add rainy effect using PS. Sometimes rain adds a smoothy effect to your photo especially when your photo is HDR. For the people who don’t know what is HDR, it stands for high dynamic range. It is one of the most awesome photography but highly tough. You can google search for HDR. Without further ado I am going to show you how to add rainy effect.

step 1

As usual open your photo using PS.

step 2

Go to image->adjustment->curves or simply press ctrl+M to open “curve” window. Basically The Photoshop curves tool is perhaps the most powerful and flexible image transformation, yet it may also be one of the most intimidating. Since photographers effectively paint with light, curves is central to their practice because it affects light’s two primary influences: tones and contrast. Tonal curves are also what give different film types their unique character, so understanding how they work allows one to mimic any film — without ever having to retake the photograph.

step 3

Make your curve looks like as shown in fig below. Basically we want to give our photo a dark look as it in night. Its up to you how much light you want.

step 4

With this all  done, press ctrl+shift+N for new layer or you can simply go to layer layer and than add new layer. Press “D” to set your foreground color to black and then press alt+backspace. Now your photo is totally black because PS filled your photo with your foreground color.

step 5

Now go to filters->add noise. You can see a pop-up window has come. If your photo is less than 2400 pixel in in width then put your amount between 10-20 and if not put your amount between 25-40. Select Gaussian because you do not want your rain droplets to be uniform in size. Also do select “monochromatic”. It changes the noise to black and white.

step 6

After this go to filters->blur->motion blur. Change the angle to 72 degree. Select the distance between 50-100 pixels depending upon the resolution of your original photo.

step 7

Now press F7 for the layer window. Select the layer which you used to fill black color. Change the mode from “normal” to “screen”. You can the water droplets. If you think you want more rain just press ctrl+J or make duplicate layer of the existing layer. You can do it “N” number of times as per your requirement. And if you think that if you have added more rain than just reduce the opacity of the “rain layer”.

And finally you are done here. I know you guys are thinking it’s so long trick but it would take only 3-4 minutes or less if you know are familiar with Photoshop.
